Fairly easy to put together. I use it under my computer desk for the UPS, bass speakers and other supplies. It makes it easier to clean the floor with this because I can clean under it instead of moving everything. It is fairly sturdy also consider how much I have on it.

Chrome wire shelving is all the rage. We bought this handy-sized Seville unit, which easily fits on a countertop, at Target. While it is advertised especially for kitchens and baths, it rusted within only 6 months when used it as a free-standing toilet paper/towel shelf, merely from steam. The decorative rails also hang upside-down, the opposite from most shelves of this type, and the resulting low rods don't prevent objects from sliding off as well as intended. We bought another wire-shelving unit made by Whitmore around the same time, a rolling cart for the laundry rm, and it is still rust-free, though frequently wet. All brands need to be measured carefully to assemble the shelves levelly, as they fit very tightly in the plastic mounting sleeves. A rubber mallet is required to gently loosen them.

As all of the other reviews state, the closet system is easy to install. Just hang the top rails in place, and every thing else just comes together. A drill, level, step stool, and a second pair of hands will come in handy.

The finish on the titanium set is a lovely satin. The clothes rods are polished chrome. Hangers easily slide over the middle supports on the rods. The depth of the clothes rods is perfect (even a little generous) for adult clothing. The shelves can be put in with the lip up to keep things from rolling off.

I recently purchased a house, and the existing use of storage space is less than desirable. I am loving the whole Configurations line. What a value.

The shelves are very sturdy. The 3 to 6 foot system will fit every width in between--just follow the directions by spacing the verticals beginning from one side or the other. I love that the shelves are easily reconfigurable. I have reconfigured the system a couple of times to make it more suited to my needs, as it is difficult to know exactly where the best place for each shelf is until you are using it. The closet system can change as you and your family's needs change. I also use extra shelves from the Deluxe kit.

I will be ordering this system for every other closet in our home. This is a huge upgrade to the basic single rod and shelf than seems to be the standard for closets. I have found that the Deluxe kit is a better value because of the extra shelves and vertical extensions that come with it. It all depends on your needs, but I find that I like to use lots of shelves. Also consider the wire mesh extension drawers; they are a bit pricy but worth it.

I truly truly like this product - it is a good modular solution for my application: a simple non-walk-in closet. There were two major hitches though:

1) After one return and a request for a second return, Amazon never got the correct item to me: The TITANIUM kit was never actually shipped to me, I always received the SATIN NICKEL kit (of the same part number: Rubbermaid 3H11). I needed to get this installed, so I had to use the different color.

2) The sheetrock inserts were a little difficult to figure out - one must carefully examine the instruction images to find out that the inserts were folded inwards for proper installation.

Otherwise, it took me ~ 30 minutes to install. It holds a LOT of heavy clothes, and does what I want. My only gripe with the final product is that in my particular situation (and likely many others) the racks in the same shelf overlap - its designed this way... for me it behaves a little funny because I like to hang things from the shelving wire. Not a terrible issue.

Enough rambling - this is a very effective and well built system. I'd do it again.

Overall, we're please with this closet kit, which we used to a create a closet in an extra room. It was fairly easy to put up, although it appeared our kit was missing a couple pieces. Still, we were able to do what we wanted with what we had. So far, it's remained sturdy and given that it's being used by a teenage boy, that's saying a lot. He's got all of his close hanging on it and stuff on the shelves. It's really helped him get more organized. We may be purchasing another kit to better organize another closet in our house.

I have purchased 3 sets of the Rubbermaid Configurations closet organizers and really love them. The price can't be beat, they are easy to install, and seem pretty durable. These shelves were just what we needed in our greenhouse. Large shelves that put together easily. Black absorbs the heat in the winter. Multiple options for size, The indivdual units hook together. I order five units but three of the five had breaks in the plastic edge on the long side of the shelf that was exposed during shipping. They should have been packed in cardboard not just wrapped with plastic with two straps holding them together.

I ordered this through Amazon because the price was good and I got Prime shipping on a larger item. It arrived quickly (of course) and was easy to assemble. It's made of 100% molded plastic. It's sturdy and fits the description as seen on Amazon. I would like to have adjustable shelves, but I knew I wouldn't get that going in to this. So, seeing that it came as described but did not blow my socks off I'll give it an average rating. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing ground-breaking at the same time.

As another rater said "the picture on the box for this product is false advertising. When you open the product you will discover that the backing for the cubes is flimsy cardboard AND the cardboard pieces are folded in half so you get a crappy seam right down the center." It also wobbles when you put it together, not a sturdy piece at all. I got it at target on sale, for 39.99 not worth a penny, I am taking it back after all that assembly. I won't be buying anymore products from closetmaid.

If tacky cheapness doesn't bother you then go for it. I also found that it did not assemble very nicely either, had gaps and unevenness. It's definitely not worth the $$$ in my opinion. The company that manufactures this product should be ashamed of itself. I returned it and found a similar product that is MUCH better than this one (brand name is Home Essentials).

I don't write many reviews but I was delighted by this shelf and it well exceeded my expectations.

You won't get it together in "only minutes" (alone, took just under an hour) but the final product is really nice and elegant for the price. Higher quality than expected, just don't expect the moon. It's sturdy. The fabric totes are cheap and cute and an easy way to express your style or personalize your shelf. The totes themselves are somewhat stiff fabric and also studier than expected.

Some reviews said screws in the finished product are left exposed but I think that has been corrected as my unit came with screw covers. I think the whole thing finishes quite nicely. A little tap of the hammer gets the cover even with the wood. Also there were no holes left exposed from optional dollies, there were matching dolly-hole stoppers included. I had no issues with drill holes absent, all of mine were present.

My very basic little electric screwdriver did the job just fine, but it says you can use a regular screwdriver if you don't have a drill.

I absolutely recommend this product to someone looking for storage or organization on a budget, I found the lowest price at my Target store, and the bins were cheap too.

I put two of these together in less than an hour with nothing more than a Phillips screwdriver. They look great and are sturdy. The backing pieces are less attractive (basically, folded cardboard), but I wasn't planning to use them anyway. I recommend that you save a lot of time and trouble--and get a more handsome shelf--by omitting the backing. We're using these as a bookshelf and drawer-storage unit in my daughter's room, and she is thrilled with the way they look. The fabric drawers (available in many colors) look terrific, fit like a glove, and hold a ton of stuff!

The overall design and versatility for possible configurations of this organizer is great, and the package I received had all the parts required to put it together.However, while the description says that the organizer is for closets 5'-10' feet, which it is, the measurements for the drill holes in the package's directions (which are difficult to follow to begin with) are useless if you aren't performing the installation in a closet that has a width not in whole-foot increments. (Like my closet which is 7'4'' on the inside, for example.) The hole placements to install the wire shelves don't work if the directions are used for a non-standard size closet. Having no measurements I could use, I had to devise my own system to decide where to place drill holes and how to install the organizer. The project turned out okay, but it was very aggravating and took a lot more time than it should have.Overall, a good product with bad instructions. Go measure your closet before you buy this organizer, and have some patience when attempting to install it.

I ordered the tower to finish my closet remodel and was disappointed to find only two shelves included. You'll notice the picture has four. The John Louis closet system seems reasonably priced until you realize how many parts and pieces you'll need to complete an even modest sized space. Overall, the quality is good, but for most walk-in closets (mine is approximately 7'x4') you'll need to order at least two complete sets to get it done.

About a month ago, I purchased and installed a John Louis Closet System (12" wide shelves) in one of my small bedroom closets. It was a struggle. In any case, I then discovered that I was one shelf short of the drawing supplied with the instructions. Somewhat annoyed, I called a 1-800 customer-service number and complained (politely). The response couldn't have gone any better and I was sent another shelf within three days. However, I noted that I was still short of shelf space and the closet, as designed, could easily use one or two additional shelves. The customer-service lady suggested I go to a couple web sites and purchase the additional shelves there. I checked with Amazon (not one of the recommended sites), and there were the shelves.

Forty-six bucks for a couple shelves? Wow! The whole closet system went for under $250, and two of the small shelves went for $46? Oh well, what can you do? I ordered the shelves and they arrived within 5 days, as promised. These shelves can be very easily damaged, but they arrived in good condition and the red mahogany finish matched my closet system perfectly. The fit was precise. I'm somewhat annoyed at the cost, but the shelves and my shopping experience would indicate 5 stars.

I bought three of these units for my garage about a year ago. I didn't think they were very sturdy putting them together but figured they were for the garage, so it was ok. Very shortly after that they started to lean. I moved only light objects to the top shelves just in case they fell over, but really thought I was being paranoid about them falling. Then continued to lean more and more, so I ran PVC pipe down the four 'pipes' that held them up - they kept leaning. In addition, the whole shelf would shake when I put comparatively heavy objects, like a 6 pack of drinks, on them. About two weeks ago, I could see the stuff on them starting to shift, so I knew it was time to get new ones. I got metal shelves at Target and am much happier. But this is the best part. I live in a rather iffy neighborhood - so if I leave things on the curb, they will be gone within a fairly short period of time. I drug the old shelves out to the curb thinking someone could use them for something . . . a man came by in a truck while I was putting the new ones together, stopped, came back, and asked me about the old ones. I told him I thought they would be ok for very light things so he took two and put them in the back of his truck, but mumbled that he didn't think they would be useful for what he wanted. So, essentially, these things are so crappy that someone who was cruising looking for trash to use really thought hard before he took them. That really tells you something.

I got this item and immediately noticed a problem. The beams are plastic and arent held together with any screws. When your putting it together you have to constantly keep tucking the beams into the the holes or it all falls apart. The shelves come with screws for the wall but the entire system is so unsteady if you put more than 50 pounds on the shelves it will rip the screws from the wall! will not recommend I will never buy this item again. I have since dispossed of it because it turned out to be no better than a garbage bag! too unsteady, plastic beams, no support structure, this is what I get for trying to avoid having to build shelving. I learned my lesson!

Being a huge Rubbermaid proponent, I scooped up a set of these shelves when they were on sale at a local retailer. After all, I have much of the old style Rubbermaid shelving in my garage and I love it!

These are not even worthy of one star. They are rickety and unstable unless you really bang things together, and then, even with a rubber mallet, you run the risk of shattering it. So you're stuck betwee a rock and a hard place. Damage the unit, or have a rickety shelving unit. Pull something off a shelf, and it could start to fall apart. Considering how easily the plastic breaks, I'm concerned how it will hold up in cold winter temperatures.

Run, don't walk, and stay away from this unit. Try to find the older style Rubbermaid shelving. You'll be glad you did it!

I was pleasantly surprised at how durable the plastic dividers are compared to other sweater shelves I've looked at. The bottom 2 units have optional dividers for storing large or small items. I used one in my daughter's closet to organize & store her extra bedding (crib sheets, blankets, changing table covers, etc). As the closet was already opened and free from other items, it only took us about 1.5 hours per side to install the products, play with the shelves and setup and make a very functional, minimalist but visually pleasing walk through closet. The parts were well marked and the instructions clear and easy to understand. We found that even with a seven foot space to work with, we had plenty of extra components from the basic system.

I bought this shelf because I was looking for something to place potted plants on that wouldn't fit on regular plant stands (long rectangular pots and round 12-14"). Shelf construction is incredibly easy and only takes about five minutes. Like other reviewers, I found that the shelf dips a little in the center, but it isn't enough to be a problem, and it will definitely support the 200 pound limit it's designed for. The price for this product is just right and it's turning out to be a perfect solution to my plant stand problem.

I purchased this and another Whitmor shelf recently in the hopes to get some organizational issues I was struggling with in my kitchen solved.. To be honest there were not all that many choices to chose from in the smaller stand alone shelves that were available that were aesthetically pleasing enough, for me to want to purchase them and have them showing and frankly I was not really sure how these chrome plated shelves were really going to look once they were assembled and being put to use in the areas I intended to use them in.

My kitchen is mostly filled black appliances with dark wood cabinetry and lighter counter tops, with just enough stainless steal to allow for the chrome shelving. I am using this shelf to hold my electric Breville Kettle, Senseo single serve coffee maker and the K-Cup Carousel (for my single server Keurig, which is the only small appliance left on my counter top anymore) which now allows for storage of the regularly used sugar or sweeteners dispensers, teabags, tea infusers, etc., etc. underneath it. For added stability and safety I have a large bar mat on the shelf under the carousel, Breville and Senseo, partially to help with water overflow or spills possibility and vibration issues from the Senseo.

Its a perfect fit, for my needs. Again - I am not sure that I would want to attempt to put anything with any substantial weight on it but then I am fairly sure that given its length and width you probably could not expect to task this shelf for much more than I have done here.

If you're looking for sturdy, stable, functional shelving, these are perfect. I needed to better organize craft supplies so purchased 1 small and 2 large units. They are easy to assemble and stack very securely with adjustable height options. SO glad I found these!

It looks nice, assembles quickly, and for low weight uses (toiletries, shoes, kitchen items) this shelf will probably do fine, but I bought it as a desktop computer stand and it is too weak for that or any other heavy objects.

If you put any significant weight on it, you will see the metal start to bow immediately. When placed on the shelf, my computer will rock back and forth after a light touch. The computer is nowhere near the stated 200 lbs. load capacity, and even just pressing down with my hands made the sides of the shelf start to bow. While the flex in the metal will decrease noise due to vibration I'm going to find a stronger replacement and move this to a closet or something....

Some assembly is required for this product. The threads of one of the supporting poles did not match, the company was notified & another two piece pole was sent to us. This a good company with which to do business.

It would have to be since it is backed by Amazon.

I had thought it would be used to transport dishware, etc. between the kitchen & the dining room, but it's also great for toting (after all, I live in Arkansas) the laundry from the dryer to the bedrooms. The cart rolls easily on bare floors or carpeting.

Love it. Perfect height. Love that it has wheels on the bottom. I bought a cart like it from walmart and I was not as pleased as this one. It wasn't quite as tall as this one. Maynbe 1-2 inches shorter, and didn't come with the wheels like this does. I turned the top over so I could put my microwave on the top. Working great for that so far. Wonderful, modern looking product. Love it.

This tie rack fits my ClosetMaid 12" shelf installed about 6 years ago perfectly. I was not sure if the hang rod would get in the way, but they thought of this when they designed the front bracket. Unpacking the parts, screwing a piece to the front, snapping another piece over the back, and hooking it to the underside of the shelf took about 3 minutes. I wasn't too thrilled that the unit was listing to one side, but when I hung it full of ties it righted itself. An oval handle lets you pull the bar with 12 hooks on each side forward.

I don't think you can get this to hang from a ClosetMaid 'close mesh' shelf, because the front bracket that hooks between wires (5/8") is wider than the close mesh spacing.

All in all it does an nice job of organizing ties. 5 stars for design. 3 stars for fit. After all, there is only so much precision you can get from mass produced steel stamping and formed wire, coated in thick white paint. But for the price, you really can't complain.

I ordered two of these and thought they would be similar to shelving we already have. The shelves are narrower than I expected (only 14" deep) - my fault for not paying attention when I ordered them - and since they are narrow, the units can be tippy. They come with brackets to affix the shelving to the wall. I haven't used the brackets but put a shim under each front side to make it harder to tip over forward. If you have small children, you will want to affix the shelves to the wall.

I thought they were a little expensive, since I found similar shelving at a local store that were cheaper (and they were a few inches deeper). However, the nice thing about how these are designed is you can put them together in a minute. They are not fancy but they are serving their purpose.

I ordered 3 of these. I originally ordered the "Plano Molding 925 Heavy Duty Shelving with Vents, 5-Shelf" but bought the Gracious Living ones to save a few dollars. What a mistake. The plastic in the Gracious Living shelves is very brittle and 1 of my 3 units had cracked horizontal supports on all the shelves ( I didn't return it because I needed something and decided I could live with storing very light items on this one shelf)

If you want a cheaply made storage shelf get this one if you want something that will last get the Plano.

After being frustrated with hard-to-assemble steel shelving that I bought at a local store (rhymes with "Dal-Mart"), I saw the reviews for this shelving and decided to have a go.

Well, I now have two of these units in my garage and two more ordered. I assembled each unit in less than five minutes, and I am known as the World's Least Mechanically-Inclined Man. The shelves are very sturdy and hold nearly full gallon cans of paint without sagging, as well as canned goods and other heavy items. They are also very stable if you put heavy items on the lowest shelf, which saves the trouble of bolting them to the wall.

My garage is now semi-organized (and moving towards fully-organized) thanks to these shelves. I do feel that the price is paid, nearly $75, is a bit high--I would price these shelves at $55-$60, but I haven't comparison shopped to see if $75 per unit is a reasonable value.

The step-by-step approach provided with the FastTrack Freeslide kit easily doubled the usable space in my wife's closet.

I started measuring the space and realized all I needed to do was get the initial mounting bar level, drive in a few screws, put up the support beams and snap in the shelves. It is amazingly sturdy.

This kit exceeded my expectations.

This was pretty easy to install and I like that the set can be configured various ways. I created plenty of space for hanging items and set up a row of shelves on one end for all the folded things like swaeters, tshirts, shorts, etc. I bought two sets for an 11' long reach in closet. I wanted extra shelves, which were easily found at Home Depot.

Pros:
* Easy to install (with two people)

* can be configured many ways to suit your needs

* Good price

* many accessories are available such as hanging drawers

Cons:

* The shelves could be a little deeper

* These are wire shelves so you cannot put anything really heavy them, but they are fine for clothes, hand bags, etc. I wouldn't put storage totes on them.

I have a 5' 3" entry closet with the standard closet package that was constantly in a mess. My wife also had trouble reaching items on the single shelf. This really improves space utilization and access. Also easy to put up although you may need to drill your own holes in the system support bars if you want to hit your studs. I just redid my closet and I wanted two full rolls of hanging rods; one full roll on top and another full role on the bottom, but the starter kit only came with what like three rods two up and one down so I was soooo happy they sold this separately. Otherwise I was contemplating on ordering another kit just to get the hang rods, but this is a much better solution. Everything was super easy and what a cheap way to update a 1980's closet with no room!

This was perfect for the small back wall of our closet, but be aware that although it says it's a "kit", it's not. It comes with shleves and rods, but the tracks to mount them on are not included and neither are any screws or wall anchors. You have to buy all that stuff separately.

Why does Amazon/Rubbermaid use a stock photo showing additional (optional) items??? I am referring to the wall brackets, as the two other one-star reviewers did. The title calls this a "kit". It is only a shelf/rod assembly, not a kit. I too purchased this item believing everything in the picture was included. Since I waited too long before opening the package, I was unable to return it and I am forced to purchase additional items which I feel should be included with this so-called kit. The least Amazon could do is change the title. What I wish they would do is send me the brackets without charge.

I actually purchased two different sets plus extra baskets. Then laid it all out to fit the unusually shaped walk in closet in my new (old) house. The Rubbermaid system is great. It went in easily, is extremely flexible and very strong. I love the way our closet turned out. It took about six hours from start to finish. Our closet is 100 inches long, 78 inches wide, one side is 90 inches tall, the other side is 75 inches tall.

The flexibility of the sets made it possible to get exactly the kind of layout that I wanted. The sliding baskets are wonderful and hold lots of stuff. One word of warning, though. Put together drawers and divided boxes are also available. I don't recommend them at all. The drawers are too small to be very useful. They are very tedious to put together, too.

We had previously been using plastic shelving like Rubbermaid 7086 72-Inch Five-Shelf Shelving Unit but after filling all of the shelves, it got pretty darn wobbly, to the point where we felt we had to be extra careful stacking and unstacking boxes from them. Enter Honey-Can-Do SHF-01456 4-Tier Closet Organizing Shelving Unit!!! The look is kinda cold but in our little basement warehouse filled with junk these are perfect! The height can be customized for each shelf, and they hold sooo much more weight without wobbling at all. Our plastic ones don't do that. highly recommended

I bought this to use as a make-shift storage system for my husband's t-shirts. It took me all of five minutes to put the unit together straight out of the box. I couldn't guess how it would work with heavier fair, but it works perfectly for what I had in mind. It's compact and doesn't take up much room in our bedroom, but it's big enough to fit 40+ folded shirts on the bottom three shelves. The only thing I'd mention, like one of the previous reviewers, is because I didn't do the math, the shelf was a little smaller than what I expected. Still, that's my bad, not the product's.

These shelves do what they are supposed to - save space in a cramped apartment and is perfect for me. I have stashed quite a few clothes in there and it looks quite strong. Besides, there are very few components to put together and you have a stack of shelves in under 5 mins. The picture can a little misleading in terms of the size and therefore, make sure the dimensions of the product fit your needs before buying.

I purchased this item and was very disappointed. Some of the corners were damaged in shipping because it was not packaged adequately. Most of the shelves and vertical panels had the finish chipped along the edge. Half of the rods were pressed into ovals when they should have been round. The chipped edges were not the result of the shipping but just an inferior product. Not something I want to spend $$$ on and put up in my house.

I love these easy track systems for closets. This is the second unit that I have purchased. I went from a single closet to the walk in type and this second unit will amend the first. Installation is easy (hardest part is finding the studs) and it have many versatile configuratons. The shipper was a bit of a disappointment. Package arrived with some damage and a 2ft wardrobe rod was flattened. Their solution was for me to send the whole unit back ($58 shipping) so that they could replace the unit, or I could call the manufacturer (answering machine) and hope they might send a replacement part. If there is a charge for the replacement part then I may as well go to Fred Meyer (Kroeger) and just by the 48" rod for $12.99 and cut it down. That's way cheaper than paying to ship back for replacement. The closet system in 5 stars, but the shipper is 1 star so it gets a 3 star rating from me.

None of the descriptions mention needing a hacksaw, but you will need one to trim the metal shelving. I was unpleasently surprised to find this out. Other than that, I'm fairly satisfied. The directions arn't very clear, so if you're not very handy you're going to need some help.

I purchased this organizer, based on the product description. The description states that you get the glass doors, and three different size drawers. Upon receiving my first order, I noticed that neither the doors or drawers were in the box. I called Amazon, and the customer service rep. agreed that these items are included. We placed a second order (re-ordered same item), guess what, you only get the organizer pictured. Since I had to pay about $250.00 more for the 16" wide shelving kit, compared to the 12" wide unit, I feel that this product is over priced. It is ridiculous to pay so much for only 4" of extra shelf width. I feel that Amazon has mis-represented the product, and should take action to correct this issue. Purchased (2) of the Premier version of this system which comes with 12 inch towers to do a 15ft by 7 ft walk in closet. After designing for the most efficient utilization of space, found I had to add two more 16" towers and (4) 2 pack shelves for the back wall and to get my shoes into the tower.I switched the 16 inch towers to one side of the room and place the 12 inch towers (for shoes) on the reverse side of the room. That alone cost another $500. Can you believe that the shelf system 2 pack does NOT come with the pins to attach to the towers? Even though you spend $60 for 4 ft of pre-cut russian pine shelf kit. These bozo's have priced out that you must be nickled & dimed for every shelf pin, bracket or metal attachment at around $ 1.00 a piece when you buy it from one of their dealers. The company itself doesn't sell it in bulk and their dealers are up on Ebay with ads trying to hawk a 4 pack for 4.00 + 8.00

Shipping & handling for a total cost of $12 for four shelf brackets.

What a rip off! After you have spent over $1,000 in 2 closet systems and shelf parts it should at least come with the required shelf pins & brackets.

Plus you can't even get these parts online at Home Depot or Target online.. you are forced back through the John Louis dealer system for these parts. With the economy the way it is I have seen 2 dealers who have gone out of business in my state so I am forced to shop OUT of state & incur a delivery charge for these parts. Not happy.

"Very mixed opinions" 2008-11-12

My husband and I are experienced do-it-yourselfers. This left us in a bit of a conundrum. We didn't want to buy the melamine stuff at Home Depot or Lowe's - it's better than it used to be, but still pretty cheap looking. But we also didn't want to hire a custom place who wants to do it all themselves (at quite the cost) since we could do most of it ourselves. Nor did we want to go with one of the cabinet companies (like American Woodmark or Kraftmaid - they make kitchen and bath cabinets, but also have closet options), because that would also be more expensive than we wanted.

We came across this John Louis Home solution originally on the Costco website. Costco sells a complete kit which includes the standard kit as shown here, plus a package of 2 extra tower shelves, 3 8" drawers, and 2 6" drawers. Target.com sells individual components in addition to kits, so we purchased from both places. This seemed like the only available middle-ground: better quality, with some configuration options, but not custom and not top-of-the-line (especially in price). So we ended up buying enough components to fill our fairly large master closet plus two other bedroom closets.

All-told, we installed 4 of the 16" towers with drawers, 2 of the 12" towers with shelves only, plus the connecting shelves and bars. We also installed some extra stand-alone shelves in an alcove in our master closet.

Our review of this suite of products is very mixed. There are some good and some not so good aspects of this system.

The good:

- It is solid wood, which gives it a sense of quality and sturdiness

- The drawer glides are the type with ball-bearings and full-extension capability. It's really nice to be able to open the drawers all the way and the ball-bearings make for a very smooth glide

- As other reviewers here and at Target.com have mentioned, the finished product really does look good

- The instructions are pretty clear - the install as documented is time-consuming, but accurate and easy to follow

- The packaging is quite good. Although most of the boxes sustained some shipping damage, with one very small exception, all the contents were in perfect condition when opened

- The John Louis customer service was really good. One of the drawers was missing a cam bolt and none of the others had extras, so I called their 800 number to request a replacement. I got directly to a human without a maze of phone selections, and she was very friendly and professional. She UPSed replacement parts to me right away.

- Assembling the drawers is easy.

The not so good and the bad:

- Although the drawer glides are smooth, they are also somewhat stiff - you can't just nudge a drawer closed - you have to push it all the way in.

- The screws provided aren't of very good quality - they strip pretty easily

- The manufacturing is somewhat careless. There are places where the wood was damaged in the fabrication process. They patched those areas with wood filler and stained over. Normally, this wouldn't be a bad thing, but the patch jobs were fairly sloppy. I also had one drawer part with the cam bolt holes mis-drilled, and another drawer part with the track guides on a diagonal, instead of straight across

- Installing the drawers is very tedious. Although the tracks go into specified places in the towers (the 16" deep ones), the drawers don't have pre-drilled holes for their half of the tracks - just guidelines, which sometimes are right on, and other times aren't at all close

The ugly:

- The installation method is unnecessarily complicated, and in our opinion not structurally sound. The towers themselves are quite heavy, especially with drawers. And yet the towers are held to the wall by just 6 thin, 1/2" screws, placed very close to the edge of the wood. The whole thing is also supposed to be supported in the top shelf, which doesn't make sense. We actually ended up using the materials but completely re-engineering the installation process. What we did is much more solid and faster. I would not feel comfortable installing the units as prescribed. I think within a few years (if not sooner) most installations would loosen or have some other structural failure.

Now that it's all done, and looking back, we would still do this again for two reasons (1) we have the expertise to deal with the challenges, and (2) it's still the only option in this class. If there were other options, we'd probably explore those, but there aren't at the moment.

"Overall a pretty good system" 2008-09-14

My system (same as here, but honey finish) looks good, but before buying, you should know two things:

1. Unless you get really lucky, you are likely to need a fair amount of experience in rough carpentry to make these systems work in your space. We had to do a fair amount of sawing of wood and metal poles. The hanging hardware requires one-sixteenth-inch precision -- not an easy goal in an older home with less-than-square walls. My wife and I are experienced do-it-yourselfers, and needed that experience to come up with a good solution.

2. The wood looks good, but it is really soft and splits along the grain easily. I would not recommend this system for a kid's room. During the installation, we had to take care in putting in screws.

On the plus side, the finish looks good, and I really like the hanger-bar system, which allows free movement of the clothes past the supports.

"Made In China . . . Now you've been forewarned" 2008-07-05

Rough finish quality, they use an extremely soft wood that you can score even with your fingernail. I think after a year of use in the kids' closets, these would look like trash. Imperfections in wood filled with putty that doesn't stain and blend with the wood. Even cross slats are often not parallel with each other! Side panels are often warped making drawer operation (if you plan on using drawers) very difficult. The slots for shelves on the vertical pieces look like they were carved with a kitchen knife by a five year old, sometimes these slots are not even from left to right, making the shelves crooked.

Hardware quality varies from mediocre to abysmal: screw heads missing screwdriver slots, brackets that are rusty coming out of the plastic bag, wall anchors cast from plastic, but the casting halves never exactly match, making these a real bear to screw into drywall. I ended up throwing away most of the supplied hardware and buying them new from Lowe's.

Packaging is also very substandard, CHECK PACKAGE FOR DAMAGE BEFORE ACCEPTING FROM UPS!!! Small divots in the outer box translates to broken or cracked wood inside. The thin carton does a poor job protecting the wood inside.

The finsished project is a thing of beauty and so very wonderful. Glowing words I know for just a closet. My closet was such a mess I literally could not find thing in it. Now everything is within plain sight and easily accesable.

The project was not as easy to install as the manufacturer led me to believe however with the help of an able handyman it was installed perfectly. I would not advise the average DIYS to try this project. Another fault is that we had to keep ordering additional accessories to achieve the results we thought we saw in the photos. The photos are not misleading, its just that you really don't know what you want or need until the project is underway.

All in all I'm in love with the finished project.

We bought one kit for a 7' reach-in closet and had to modify it a bit because the instruction book gives suggestions for 10' and 8' layouts. I'd recommend a circular saw for cutting shelves and rods if your closet is not exactly 8' or 10'. Also not on the "required tools" list were a stud-finder and a drill. We found drilling pilot holes to be appropriate in some cases, and the large numbers of screws made using our drill a must. The wood is soft and frayed slightly when cut. Because of that, and a few nicks during installation, the included touch-up stain came in handy. Also useful was a transparent grid which allowed us to play around with different layouts before we ever began. Installation took two handy people about 6 hours, partly because of the limited space in the closet. I'd recommend removing the closet doors if you're not installing in a walk-in. I'd also HIGHLY recommend reading the instructions all the way through before beginning, laying out all the materials and labeling the bags of screws by length, and taking your time. This is not a job that can be rushed. When complete the closet looked great and the system is very sturdy.

"Spend more time on plan than install" 2008-03-31

It was easier than wire shelving. The supplied hollow wall anchors are so-so. Using a cordless drill, hammer, and miter saw speed things up. If you are lucky enough to have straight walls, you shouldn't need the hammer. If you don't want arms like Popeye, get a drill (all fasteners are screws). This system also gives you a perfect excuse to go buy a laser level. Once the tools are collected and the plan is FINALLY agreed upon, the closet can be installed and used in under a day.

First, the 16" model is available at Target for $479.99 (but we did have to pay a 5% sales tax)

The instructions are reasonably straight forward but should be read very carefully and:

(1) Make sure that you do not block any electrical outlets with the shelving by planning ahead and

(2) If you can find studs do so, plastic anchors they supply are OK, but the whole system is cantilevered (that is no support on the floor) so you have to be in solid to the wall, especially at the one bracket end.

(3) Finally when installing the tower brackets do make sure that they are the right distance apart AND in proper alignment to the top brackets that were the first step in installation, otherwise you might have the top shelf resting on only PART of the tower (it will work but not look "finished."

Also, you will need a 10 foot ceiling to hang two clothes racks in the same bay, on an eight foot ceiling you will be out of luck there is just not enough vertical space to do it.

This set includes 2 - 26" Rubbermaid Configurations shelves and 4 brackets to hold them on to an existing Configurations closet organization kit. You can add 4' of shelving to your kit either by overlapping the two shelves (side by side) or using them separately; one above the other.

I installed a custom 3'-6' Configurations kit and couldn't use the vertical extensions, but found that additional shelving made my closet more functional. This is a relatively inexpensive way to organize a small space and if you don't use all the parts from one kit, hold on to them as you may find uses for them if you end up rearranging the existing kit or installing one in another closet.

Before you buy this item makes sure you already have the 25" upright extensions that actually hold these shelves up. Otherwise, you will need to special order them. These are shelves only, and do not come with the brackets (extensions) that attach to the wall. This in no way should be called a "kit". I installed these about 2 years ago in my master closet x 2. I found the corner unit and installed that so that I have a very complete closet system. My closet looks fantastic, especially since I went to costco and bought the non slip velvet type hangers they sell. This system is extremely easy to install. The only problem I had was that it was a bit ungainly putting in some of the shelving. I remember having to hoist some big prebuilt pieces in. I love love love my closet. I changed it up a little to customize it. I put a 24 drawer in mine and one of the wire racks at the bottom of one of the shelving sections. The wire basket is great for throwing in all your summer sandals and flip flops. It is an easy system to install but it does take time. Don't think you can whip this in in a half hour. It took me at least 5 hours to do both sides of my very large closet. (approx. 14x12)and I had to go back to the store to get more parts so I could go wall to wall to wall so it probably took me longer than that. The best part is that this system is not sitting on the floor. If I want to recarpet, I do not have to dismantle my closet system to do so, and that is especially why I picked this type of system. I was attracted to the one bar hanging system. The first thing you do is find studs, measure for the height to mount the hanging bar on, then mount the bar by using screws to stud. Once you have the bar mounted, it is a matter of hanging the walls,attaching rods,adding shelves and cloths. In addition to hanging this system, I first had to remove all of my clothes, paint the insides and then rehang all of my clothes. If you are going to go to the work of hanging up this beautiful new system you don't want to have ugly old scuffed up walls behind it, so spend the extra time and 10.00 to paint. You won't be sorry.

I've used these shelving kits in several homes. Always a hit.

Just make sure you mount the bar level and at the recommended height. Also, make sure

you use the wall anchors supplied or hit studs. After that, installation is a snap.

Another reviewer groused about the wide shelves. He/she might be happy to know that

you can buy 12" shelves pre-cut. Also, it's not difficult to cut shelves to custom widths

if you have access to a table saw or are careful with a circular saw.

Easy Track only carries 24" wide shelves, which are not suitable for small (under 60") closets and have anything left over to hang clothes.

Easy Track has good prices for the 'hanging' closet kit, but nothing for the small 'hanging' closet kit market.

I have 4 small closets where I could only use an 18" wide shelf/drawer/basket.

Another closet kit company 'Easy Closet' carries the 18" wide shelf/drawer/basket but are more pricey.

Easy Track is apparently unaware that they would have the affordable 'hanging' small closet kit market to themselves with the 18" wide shelf/drawer/basket.

The Rubbermaid Configurations 3H88 Custom Closet Kit is a great product. I just love it! It was pretty easy to install. It is well made and not flimsy. There are many ways you can set this up to meet your needs. We needed to get as much hanging space as we could out of a 5' closet. I am a clothes hog and this closet was full of just our winter clothes. We did end up dropping it down about 6 inches from what the directions gave because our closets were only 7' high and we could have dropped it down even a couple of more inches. We set it up with one long rod on top with the shelving across the top and a bottom rod for shorter clothing. We used 3 of the shelves for shoe racks and they work out great for us rather than adding the shoe racks. We really didn't have the room to add them and the only difference we could see is that they are flat rather than angled and the ends are open but we have not had a problem with shoes falling off and find them pretty easily. We also used a couple of the shelves for clothing. We ended up with two extra shelves and purchased additional double slotted wall brackets (other brands can be used for this purpose). We are going to install these to the side and run it the depth of the closet for the additional shelving so it ends up using up space that is normally unused. We ended up with a much more organized and useful closet and we can find things very easily. The rod on the old closet was bending in the middle from the weight of the clothes. We also purchased the belt rack and it works out great with this system. We eventually plan on doing the same to one of our additional bedrooms which is just packed with all the summer clothes. We looked at other products but in our opinion we think this is better made than others.

This is a great solution to a messy closet. I am a female and I put this up without any help (the 8'-10' version). I highly recommend using a laser level and a small level just to double check that it is level.I like this so much in my 9' closet that I'm adding another to a 3' closet.

This is a very flexible system for maximizing your closet space. Take your time assembling it and it will be quite sturdy. I do have a few issues with it. First, the drywall anchors don't work very well; I never could get them to open up properly with the supplied tool. Second, the vertical supports are supposed to be placed 22 inches apart, making it impossible to anchor all of them into studs which have a 16-18 inch separation. Fortunately, they supply enough brackets and shelves so you can put the vertical supports at almost any interval and it will still set up fine. Lastly, if you install it at the height they specify, you will have a lot of trouble reaching the top shelf if you have 2 tiers of hangers. With the second unit I installed, I dropped the height by 7 inches and it is much more convenient that way.

Love this closet system! I have a 4 foot closet and this set worked great for it. Took about an hour to install. Once you get the wall brackets in, it is super super easy to arrange the rest. If my needs change, I can rearrange the shelves in probably 5 minutes or less. Super happy with this purchase and will seriously consider Rubbermaid for other closets now.

"a great closet system but not a beginner project" 2010-01-09

I am very happy with the way my closet turned out. For the price, it is definitely an upgrade from your normal apartment closet. I agree with other reviews that the wood is a little cheap and very brittle, but this is only a problem during assembly. once it's up and there are clothes on there, it doesn't make much difference and it looks great for what I paid.

As for installation, it was NOT a beginner project. I had to do a lot of improvising. Not everything fit exactly, so I had to move around the location of the anchors. Also the measurements that come on the included diagram are not exact. This could be caused by the shape of my wall because I am in an old house. You have to be very careful with the wood because it will break if you over tighten or try to bend. I broke a shelf pretty easily when trying to screw the hanger into it.

My biggest advice is don't waste time anchoring the system to drywall. Just go only for the studs and skip any anchors that are in drywall. The drywall anchors that were included were very flimsy. I bought some molly bolts at Home Depot but ultimately decided that the best support was going to come from the studs. I had to move some things around to do this, so it takes a little more than beginner level to process where the loads are resting on.

For the money, I think the JLH closet system is very good. It takes some time and effort to install, but once up it looks very good. It helps if you've had some do-it-yourself experience. The instructions are pretty good, but there are always little situations that the instructions won't fully address, so you'll need to apply some DIY savvy here and there.

Our closet dimensions required a 12" unit on one side (this one, purchased at Amazon), and a 16" unit that we purchased at Costco. The 16" unit included 5 drawers, which was not an option that I could find on Amazon.

The product is well made. The wood is attractive, but is not, of course, hardwood, so can dent fairly easily. The hardware, hanging bars, drawer handles, and drawer slides are all good quality. We did, however, run into a few quality control issues: slats that were noticeably not parallel on one shelf; a drawer face with missing holes for the handle; a drawer face with pretty unattractive black grain; a few dents in the wood from packing/shipping; a drawer that did not assemble well. When I called JLH customer service, they answered right away, were very pleasant and helpful, and offered to mail whatever pieces were not in good shape. Replacements pieces arrived in about a week. I was very impressed with their customer service and the way they supported their product.

If you want to avoid the cheaper looking particleboard or wire options found at large home improvement stores, but not pay for an expensive custom closet system, then the JHL closet organizer products are a great option. I would definitely go this route again.

This product looks good when finally installed, but it will take some time to install properly. I have basic carpentry skills and it took me about 10 hrs to plan the design and install. The product quality is nice, I had no problems with scratching the finish or splitting the wood (predrilling is necessary).

Bought two of the Premier Red Mahogany 12" sets for our walk-in closet. The wood as others have mentioned is light and gets scratched easily -however I didn't see that as a disadvantage with the weight -easier to install on your own - also wood didn't split. The main thing is to make sure you have the right tools-I used two drills - one impact drill with a phillips head bit to screw in screws (think the impact drill feature helped considerably to drive the wall anchors into the drywall and the screws into the studs)-the other I had a 1/8" drillbit to predrill (predrilled everything except forthe small screws).Had a couple of levels and a miter saw to cut the shelves to size.

Before you start read the instructions ahead of time and follow them closely. Also make sure if you select one of the 10" configurations that you have enough shelving (I had a 8" closet so I didn't need all the shelving but you may need additional shelving and additional curved wooden supports- the package comes with six but some of the configurations show using eight).

The u-clamps that go on the wall to support the shelves do not have any play so if you've got walls that have imperfections (as I did)the shelves will not slide into the clamps-you will need take a pliers and open up the clamps or shim the clams.

Another key consideration is the height of the top shelf when installing the two shelves one above the next -you are expected to position the upper shelf at 84"- if I had to do the installation again I would have tried to install this perhaps at 72" or at least where my wife (5'1") can reach it. At least for her clothes she doesn't need the same kind of room as mine(the 84" is just right for me -actually the suits and shirts reach the top of the bottom shelf reducing the effectiveness of the bottom shelf for storage.

The wood scratches when pushing the shelves into the clamps -but they are mostly hidden-of the two touch-up bottles one was completely dry (not a big deal to me because I had other stuff to use for the touch up). Also be careful with the application of the supplied touch-up-it eats up the existing finish if you accidentally brush on sections that are not clear wood.

Also assume it will take you at least a full day for each closet set installation- more if you are not quite handy and familiar with tools.

The end result is excellent -closet looks like a million bucks (ok perhaps 250K since I did not add doors or use the 16" which allows you to add drawers but I didn't need any). Am planning to get more sets for other closets in the house. Also now that I have installed the two

We read the reviews and this seemed like a good option. After several hours of installation it does look nice but I'm not sure it was worth it. It is certainly better than the particle board or wire closet systems. This is not a beginner project unless you have extreme patience. Not only is there no room for error with some of the measurements and leveling there is cutting involved. When we finely finished I felt like I could have spent the same amount of time and less money to design and build my own closet system that would have been better suited to our needs.

The pieces for this set are pretty basic.

3 long pieces (either 48" each or 60" each)

3 2' shelves

4 contoured support brackets

9 or so spacers for the hanging rods

4 6' trim pieces

Tons of hardware (screws, anchors, brackets, etc.)

You really need a good trim saw, or a table saw...I can't imagine cutting the shelves with a hand saw...

It took me a while to "lay out", and design my own little customized piece. I think that I started sawing a little too early, and didn't think to make the shelf on top long enough to be one of the "stacking shelves". But it all worked out in the end...Fortunately, there is plenty of "dummy room" with the brackets in that if you cut a shelf too short by an inch, the bracket will cover for you. I had a hard time with some of the screws and brackets that were to support the shelves. If you wiggled the shelf around trying to get it in to the right spot it "crunched" the wood...Once I got going though, it really came together quickly, and looks great as a final product...Wife is very happy with results...I have tons of hardware left as I used much longer screws to really drive it in to the studs for years of use...Do get some spackle though, because leftover damage from removed wire shelving left nice big holes.

I bought this because it was fairly inexpensive and looks good. After all said and done, it was nice, fairly simple to put together, but there were a lot of pieces left over and I'm left feeling like I paid a bit more than I should have. I have a 6' wide closet. It's made for closets that are up to 8' wide. Maybe they should sell them for 4', 6' and 8' systems separately. I now have several long pieces of wood, shelving and tons of hardware that I don't need, so it's a bit of a waste.

Ok, that was my big criticism. Otherwise, it looks very elegant, is sturdy (as long as I installed it correctly!) and I would recommend it.

I received this and unfortunately the box was a bit banged up and this resulted in some dents and scratches in the wood. It was too much work to pack it back up to return it, so I'm keeping it. Also a chunk was missing from one of the wood clothes rails, looked like maybe a knot of wood had fallen out. Otherwise the parts look to be sturdy. Make sure your closet is not bigger than 10 feet if you don't want to make adjustments to the system. I do wish Amazon would provide a partial credit, for items that are damaged, but usable and too cumbersome to repack and send back.
